^ It's not new. The use of sand as a medium apparently originated in Asian and Middle Eastern cultures, but the use of a light box must be pretty recent.

I'm not surprised that sand has been used as a medium for a long time, but sand animation is fairly recent. The artist mentioned in this article started making some films around 1970, and although I haven't looked, I got the impression that they were done like claymation, using a movie camera to shoot one frame at a time. Sand animation came some time later.

It is still pretty amazing though!

Oh yes, I've seen this myself before. It is indeed absolutely amazing. Sand is such a cool medium to work with.

it was available to everyone a week ago. but i wanted to show it to someone yesterday and i couldn't.
