Polly's musical references

Post by DrDark »

Let's use this thread to collect musical references for Polly's songs.

Here's one I came across today that I wasn't familiar with: To Bring You My Love and Zep's Whole Lotta Love (in turn based on Wille Dixon's You Need Love).

Polly's I think I'm a Mother and Beefheart's Dropout Boogie (from Safe As Milk):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1zo33lWQ9Y" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

You wanna do what?, you wanna do what?
I told you what, I told you what
You wanna do what?, you wanna do what?
I told you what, I told you what

Go t'school, go t'school
Go t'school, go t'school
Just cain't, just cain't
Just cain't, just cain't
Dropout, dropout, dropout, dropout

Cain't get a job, cain't get a job
Don't know what it, don't know what it
What it's all about, what it's all about
You told her you love her so bring her to mother
You love her, adapt her, you love her, adapt her
Adapt her, adapter, adapt her, adapter
'n' what about after that
what about after that

Support her, support her
She says you'd support her
Get a job, get a job
Get a job, get a job
You gotta support her
You told her you love her so bring her to mother
You love her adapt her, you love her adapt her
Adapt her, adapter, adapt her, adapter
'n' what about after that
'n' what about after that

I see Polly's I Think I'm a Mother as kind of a response to this song. It's both lyrically and musically related to it.

You think you'll come over?
I’ll give you my number
You love her, support her
Then give me your mother
You come take me home and
Take me to your doctor
You think you'll come over?

I think I'm a mother

Roll over, roll over
And roll me in manna
You lover, my lover
You just roll me over
You give me your mother
A man, if I love her
I’ll love her, I'll keep her
I better just keep her

“Come on and support her”
I said to the mother
She said, “ You come over”
She said she's a voter
I love her, I kept her
And then she just left and
Alone, I implore ya

I think I'm a mother

I need you mother
More than ever

I can't believe I forgot about this one:

The opening riff of Polly's Heaven is the same as the opening riff of Captain Beefheart's Tropical Hot Dog Night (from Shiny Beast).

There's no version of Heaven up on YouTube that I can link to and the only verions of Tropical Hot Dog Night on YT are heavily obfuscated to beat the Warner Music Group's automated song detector/censor. Here's an instrumental version:

Tropical Hot Dog night's lyrics were also utilized by Polly for Meet Ze Monsta, as detailed on the "Polly's lyrical references" thread:
