Re: 2016-06-24 - Down the Rabbit Hole Festival (Beuningen,
You have apparently come from good families when a woman wants to get the cover of OOR: PJ Harvey (22.45, Hotot) was last April the first female musician in nearly three years on the front of the magazine - and was Anouk again the previous! - And also proves here why they should be on the most prominent site of a festival. With a full orchestra she comes quietly with her saxophone from the wings while opener Chain of Keys. Latest great album The Hope Six Demolition Project will star in the 75-minute show today, but an artist who made a whole album about the history of England (Let England Shake) creates a huge elephant in the room one day when this. The day of the Brexit to be precise and PJ Harvey is there to do have to say something about it. Then it happens, after a number six: Harvey picks up a paper there, and quotes a poem by John Donne in 1624 called No Man Is An Island (!):
No man is an island, entire of itself;
every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main
If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less,
as well as if a promontory were,
as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were:
any man's death diminishes me, Because I am Involved in mankind,
and Therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
it tolls for thee
Better and more powerful it could not: Harvey speaks consistently through music and poetry evening. She brings her lyrics with focus and charisma, sometimes with an extra hint of theatrical looks and gestures to the first rows. At just the right time is The Glorious Land, with both message and execution on a day like this provide goosebumps. Later landmark Down By The Water makes for some wild befor ringers working their way towards the front, but the show is more than waiting for a hit. If Harvey and orchestra acts with beautiful Anacostia River, awaits the Hotot up with yearning for a possible encore, which unfortunately does not. Down The Rabbit Hole Day 1 concludes with a headline show of unparalleled class whose message and music are just as interesting. (DC)
