this verse in particular

"Later in the dark
I thought i heard Louis' voice
calling for his Mother, then me,
but I couldn't get to him"

sends chills down my spine

I found that extremely poignant on first listen as well.

Primitive ranking (all are marvelous):
England
Written on the Forehead
Hanging in the Wire
On Battleship Hill
The Glorious Land
The Last Living Rose
The Words That Maketh Murder
Bitter Branches
In The Dark Places
All and Everyone
Let England Shake
The Colour of the Earth

Thankyou, Nathan and thischarmingman...why pamper life's complexities when you can post the whole of Polly's new album?! ;-)

The album made my day, but this definitely made my night.

It's hard for me to fairly rank the songs since the "new" songs are occupying more of my attention than the songs I've been listening to for the last month or longer.

That said, I know that "On Battleship Hill" and "England" rank among my favorite PJ songs of all time. I can't listen to them without physically feeling something, a beautiful little pain.

I don't think there is a dud in the bunch. "All and Everyone" is the one song that didn't punch me in the face immediately, but it continues to sort of reveal itself to me and I think it will eventually become a highlight. "The Colour of the Earth," when I heard the snippets, didn't seem like it would be my favorite, but there is something about having that uplifting melody mixed with her lyrics at the close of the record that kind of charms me.

She never ceases to amaze me, to really knock my fucking socks off.

I'm starting to like Bitter Branches a bit more. Turned up full ball with your best set of earphones, it sounds great. The drumming and rhythm is great. It is still by far the least appealing track on the album though.

Bitter Branches is the weakest link for me, never liked that one. All and Everyone has become my favorite, the arrangement is jolting but once you get the flow it rocks. The only track i'm having an impossible time getting into is England, but The Colour of the Earth doesn't have to do anything and so good!

It's available the song called "The Nightingale"? I listened the 30 seconds preview and it sounds amazing :-)

I'm in love. There were a few moments where I found myself unable to breathe (particularly during parts of On Battleship Hill, England and The Colour of the Earth). I'm glad that I was able to take this album in pieces because hearing all of it, new, on the first listen might have caused a bit of sensory overload.

I love Polly's entire catalogue and have been a fan for many years, but I can say that this is easily ranks my favorite album of hers. IMO, there isn't a single dud in this batch of songs. Simply....brilliant. Now, I can't wait to see all of the Seamus Murphy videos and to see some live performances. Crossing my fingers tightly that she makes it to Atlanta.

Have a glorious day, all!

I'm enjoying reading all of your very awesome reviews guys. I'm SO very tempted to download the leak, but I'm really looking forward to going to a music shop next tuesday and listen to it on the drive home. Having said that, I did download the "WTMM" single and I absolutely adore this song. So damn catchy and great.
