Re: Looking for: PJ Harvey picking favorite albums of 1999/2
Does anyone have the 1998 list?? I remember she mentioned Sonic Youth's "A Thousand Leaves" somewhere... would love to see what the full selections looked like.

Just listened to some of her old stuff, up to White Chalk.
I think she's lost more than she's gained. Her emotional & vocal range have been sacrificed for .... what? I'm not quite sure.
Particularly on LES, her voice (for me) sounded too detached, too far removed. I think she said this was ...

Re: "The Hollow of the Hand" shows (ALL about both nights)
This concept is garbage. Sorry, but she's losing it. I guess I'll wait for the full album/tour to accurately assess how I feel about this whole thing, but it has vapid War Tourism written all over it. Privileged white lady of the West bearing her MBE gazing upon the people affected by violent ...

Re: News AFTER "Recording in Progress"
Whoa, that does look like Gillian.... I attended this event and I must have been in some kind of trance because I didn't notice her. Didn't end up taking any pics or vids or anything because I just want it to exist simply in my mind.
This was a lovely book launch! It wasn't jam-packed as I thought ...

^ Gutless was Tim Farthing's band before his partnership during SFTCSFTC. Quite heavy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2D6hrHcH-E

All these woodwinds! Didn't Polly once declare herself a Morphine fan? Maybe we're seeing that influence finally creep in.
In my alternate universe the sax arrangements on Polly's record would mirror the approach a band like Clock DVA took, where they don't sound quite right:

Haha. Saxaphone on her noggin! The new Kenny G. I like that jacket she's wearing.

Re: What does PJ Harvey love to listen to?
From the Select mag interview '93 with Polly and Steve Albini:
Steve: Do you like Motorhead?
Polly: I heard them when I was a lot younger and I thought they were ugly, but great music. We used to call 50 Ft. Queenie our Motorhead song.

She's also mentioned at various stages of her career:
The Fall, Th'Faith Healers (drummer was the 'Joe' who inspired the song and, subsequently, the entire Rid of Me album), Pixies, Frank Black, The Breeders, Beth Gibbons, Sandy Denny, Slint, Steven R. Smith, Motorhead, Marianne Faithfull, Nick ...

Re: PJ Harvey and Patti Smith performance
They're performing "Wing" from Patti's '96 record. One of the better songs on there. Never thought I'd see this happen! I think it's only recently that Polly has taken to Patti's stuff, especially after all the lazy comparisons she received early on in her career.

It's so weird to think this is 10 years old already! How time flies... The era that got me into her.
