Wow! Great job indeed. You really did justice to the album, and covered extensively any possible detail about and around it. And all those references to the Gardeners' contributions warmed my heart <3 (I'm the conspiracy theorist about the James Lynch voice in "The Northwood"). There's only one point I disagree: The Wind's main riff, which you describe as rather ordinary - it's actually not easy at all to play that and sing on top of it, and it's written in an odd time signature. But that's just a small detail in an otherwise superb and deep dive you did. Congratulations!

James, thank you very much for doing an in-depth research on ITD. We have a serious book made by someone who actually cares about PJ's work at last! it was a truly interesting read, one can clearly see you really put some work into it.

If i had to point out a weaker point (which doesn't bring down the value of the work at all!) i would say where you try wrapping your head around the more obscure meanings and/or the mysterious characters of the songs ( pp. 31-46 but i would add pp. 23-25 too, i'm talking specifically about the interpretation not the general analysis); one needs to be extremely careful to not project oneself (or other people) upon the lyrics of the songs: Polly's tendency to be secretive about what most of her songs are about is meant (by PJ's own admission) to incite people on making said songs their own, but one's interpretation of a song differs from the actual meaning of it. Your interpretations of said things are quite interesting , though, and i appreciate the effort.

All this to say bravo, great job and, sicerely, thank you. Maybe, in the coming years, others will write precious and passionate books like this about the other harvian Eras... who knows, you may have laid the first brick for a foundation of serious studies on PJ Harvey!



P.S. I do disagree strongly in viewing UHH as the weakest PJ Harvey album- it's a "bitter" masterpiece in my opinion- but that's all about personal taste, so it is what it is.
