Anna Calvi

A friend saw her open for Grinderman and raved about her. Brian Eno is her personal mentor. I noticed she's been garnering comparisons to Polly in the UK press, probably because Rob Ellis produced her debut. I think Polly's a lot more raw, but Calvi seems to be going for epic Morricone soundtrack vibes with this one. I was skeptical at first but after some repeated listens I think she's the real deal and I'm excited to see where she goes from here. I just hope she doesn't settle into polished complacency. Some of the songs do feel a bit contrived, like they've been belabored over and over again and it just comes across as melodrama instead of the kind of guttural music it's hyped up to be. She's playing in NYC on March 9th and I can't wait to check her out. Her guitar playing is fantastic. You can tell she has serious chops, but she knows how to hold back.

Was due to see her this Friday in Bristol, but she's injured her back and cancelled unfortunately :( Hopefully she might be better for the U.S. dates for you
Love the powerful vocals/album
