PJ Harvey will compose the score for Ian Rickson’s production of The Nest, premiering at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast in October ahead of a London run in the Young Vic’s Maria theatre.

Caoilfhionn Dunne will play Martha and Laurence Kinlan will play Kurt in a new translation of Franz Xaver Kroetz’s play by Conor McPherson, the award-winning writer of The Weir.

Questioning the moral cost of an increasingly materialistic society, Ian Rickson’s production draws out the sharp relevance of this urgent and timely two-hander.

With an original score composed by PJ Harvey, and recorded by Harvey in collaboration with James Johnston, this fable of individualism will premiere at the Lyric Theatre, Belfast 1– 22 October before a London run in the Young Vic’s Maria theatre from 28 October – 26 November.

Director Ian Rickson and PJ Harvey reunite following collaborations including Hamlet at the Young Vic in 2011, as well as Hedda Gabler at the American Airlines Theatre, New York in 2009 and Electra at the Old Vic in 2014.

Design for The Nest is by Alison Cummings, with light by Zia Holly, sound by Gregory Clarke and movement by Andy Dawson. The original score is engineered by Adam ‘Cecil’ Bartlett and recorded in London, England.

If they are going thru such details as by whom it was engineered and where, maybe it will be officially released? Let's hope so.

"According to a press release, the story will follow the plight of a truck driver who is ordered to dump toxic chemicals into a lake."

http://www.whatsonstage.com/london-theatre/news/the-nest-lyric-young-vic-pj-harvey_41380.html

It's a new translation of the 1975 play about "Kurt and Martha, parents-to-be who work hard to provide for their new family, until Kurt's boss offers him a chance to make some easy money".

I believe she will at least register the tracks (with names) on ASCAP or somewhere, like she's done with other soundtrack work.

How do you know which titles are soundtracks?

She's done "Hamlet" and "Electra", two radio-plays about Orpheus and Eurydice, but I don't recall seeing any characters' names in the titles from these lists, for example.

Conor McPherson's new play The Nest translates life into art

http://www.irishnews.com/arts/2016/08/2 ... rt-664816/

He also can't wait to see what English musician and singer PJ (Polly) Harvey and Love Hate actors Caoilfhionn Dunne and Laurence Kinlan will bring to his work.

"Ian had worked with PJ Harvey before on a number of projects so when myself and Jimmy Fay who runs the Lyric went for a read-through at a workshop with some actors, we looked around and there she was in the room," recalls McPherson.

"Jimmy said to me 'That's PJ Harvey' and I said that Ian had mentioned her working on it. I had completely forgotten about it but there she was and we both thought, 'This is brilliant'. I said to Ian to encourage her to do as much as she wants, even songs.

"The play is very episodic and it needs a bed to sit in, to flow along in so I think that a strong musical approach will be great. I'm not sure what approach she will take, it may be a bed of sound or even maybe songs. We will just have to wait and see. But it will add to the play which is a timeless story.

https://www.thestage.co.uk/reviews/2016/the-nest-review-at-lyric-theatre-belfast-a-muscular-translation/

"PJ Harvey’s spine tingling score injects a cinematic sense of drama, wrapping itself around the spectre of two small people pitted against overwhelming outside forces."

http://www.irishnews.com/arts/2016/10/07/news/the-nest-a-harrowing-critique-of-our-materialistic-society-724892/

"The sublime soundtrack by noted pop composer PJ (Polly) Harvey pointed the emotions via a kind of lyrical grunge."

http://www.irishtimes.com/culture/stage/the-nest-review-small-forgotten-people-hatch-a-terrible-truth-1.2823605

"PJ Harvey’s thickly layered score is packed with menace, imbuing Ian Rickson’s intense direction with a cinematic scope that sweeps up and dwarfs the characters’ wants and needs."

http://www.thereviewshub.com/the-nest-lyric-theatre-belfast/

"PJ Harvey’s score, particularly in lengthier dialogue-free scenes, is moody and atmospheric, building the tension as we witness Kurt’s ultimately destructive actions all in the service of "the boss"."

https://worlditineraries.co/2016/10/09/new-irish-english-play-highlights-conflicting-aspects-of-modern-life/

"This particular scene is also memorable because it combines both brilliant acting and lightning skills with an element of the production that is pivotal to its successthe overriding music. Throughout the 90 minutes (no interval), an engaging score by PJ Harvey (which she performs with James Johnston) and, in effect, acts as an added character, highlighting mood swings including a sense of rising tension, impending doom and even resolution."

"PJ Harvey’s original score really enhances the performance. Playing at intervals while the couple go about their business. Kurt going to work, Martha pottering about the house, both of them going to their allotment together, Harvey’s steady, grungy guitar alternates into soft piano throughout the play, intensifying in the darker moments."

Apparently, the whole band went to see this production in Young Vic Theatre on the day off.

http://www.whatsonstage.com/london-theatre/news/caoilfhionn-dunne-the-nest-young-vic-pj-harvey_42134.html

From Caoilfhionn Dunne interview:

"PJ Harvey is doing the music for The Nest, what's the music like?

- It's like another character. It's part of the set, lights, the performance. Polly came into rehearsals a few times and she watched us and listened to us and she read the script again and again. She really looked and listened to it and felt it and she went away and with James Johnston they recorded this magic music. It just fits in the piece very well. It doesn't impose itself, it doesn't tell you where to go, it doesn't tell you what to feel, which is a difficult thing to do. It is really perfect and simple and beautiful.

Are you a PJ Harvey fan?

- I am a big PJ Harvey fan.

So what did you think when you found out she was coming on board?

- Ian [Rickson] the director said I tripped up on the floor when he told me. It was absolutely nerve wracking having her in rehearsals. I think I just stared at the floor for about two hours."

Just out of interest, there was a woman with an Ulster accent behind me at the Brixton Academy talking to her companion about working with PJ on The Nest and trying to sound very cool and offhand about it while name-dropping as much as she could. I sympathise!
