CRITIC SHOW
PJ Harvey at the Metropolis: we have lost nothing to wait ...
15 April 2017 | Philippe Renaud | Music

And what did we expect, Polly Jean Harvey! Sixteen years since we saw her last Bell Center, really? He was already hoping to be on stage in Montreal on the release of the sublime Let England Shake, which earned him his second Mercury Prize six years ago. Yet it is on the thrust of her ninth album, The Hope Six Demolition Project , released last year, that she finally deigned to visit us on Friday night. Impeccable concert, even with the sound system of the Metropolis that made the soul just before the recall.

Drum rolls: at 20:30 pile, his musicians took the stage of assault, equipped with percussion of military band. The mise-en-scene evoked more the world of Let England Shake , impregnated by the theme of the war, than of the recent album, a sort of musical-sociological exercise leaning on misery and injustice, and resonated all the stronger That they always counted the deaths caused by the "mother of all bombs" escaped a few hours earlier.

On the theme of the ravages of war - the recent one in Afghanistan, among others - and the military campaigns led by Great Britain in its long history, the (too rare) songs on the record that featured on the program (song- title, the Words that maketh Murder ) served during the first half of the concert will be allowed the orchestra to go out, with shades of rock song fattened on saxophones framework that dictated the first part of the concert.

Naturally, the evening's repertoire was mainly devoted to the recent material of The Hope Six Demolition Project , a concept album inspired by explorations in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Washington, in the company of a press photographer. Colder than Let England Shake , the recent album is certainly refined, but arid in terms of texts. However, her author knew on stage to breathe the soul and passion that seemed to miss the studio version. This was the joyful revelation of the evening.

So much for the menu. For in general the crowd drank every word, listened with immense respect, so much so was the presence of the Englishwoman's magnetic presence, in her black swan costume, clinging to her saxophone - she did not touch a guitar Of the concert! - just and powerful in his gestures, singing in a straight and emotional voice. They were new on stage, but we only saw PJ Harvey, that's all.

And those nine were not feet of celery, let us insist. At his side stood his old accomplice John Parish (co-director of his flagship album To Bring You My Love , 1995) on guitar, saxophonist saxophonist Terry Edwards (he played two saxophones both during the song The Ministry of Defense ! ) And none other than Mick Harvey (The Birthday Party, Nick Cave The Bad Seeds), a guy whose solo career would earn him his Metropolis crowded all by himself. Solid.

Thus, the concert of one of the most captivating singer-songwriters of all genres combined on the contemporary pop scene was performed. Relevant and committed to the text, passionate in the incarnation of these. Sophisticated in her musical ideas, she exchanged the rumble of the electric guitars of her first albums appeared in the midst of grunge storm for the roar of the saxophones - they were two on stage, three when Edwards opened his mouth wide.

If the recent material was in the spotlight, PJ Harvey could not come back to us without using some of his classics, and so the memory of the blues-rock roots that soaked his first albums. From Rid of Me (1993), she offered a roaring version of 50 ft. Queenie ; Of To Give You My Love , she captivated with the title track after reducing her success Down By the Water to a dismal and poignant version, exquisite and minimalist, pushed by the rhythm of bass and drums.

PJ Harvey puts it back tonight for a few hundred lucky ones. Hopefully it will not take another century before we come back to see us.
