Here's a unique review of a Berlin gig from the very unique Howe Gelb, from his tour journal: http://howegelb.com/#/bookoflies john’s show with pj harvey happens to be just down the frigid street from my hotel. almost convenient if not for the diabolical temperature. the theater is warm and welcoming. the admiral palast. one by one i meet up with all my friends there working the show. ‘head’ is working sound, and the crew are the same as when i toured with them a couple years ago. the band is minimal and great in its lean sound; jean marc on drums stunning again (the only drummer to fill in for convertino when joey insisted on doing a calexico tour without). mick harvey in such fine prowess of application and sonic muster, and of course john parish sounding better then ever. then there’s our girl polly. decked out in a demanding deep black gown with black feathers skyrocketing out of her head. her stance is stoic with auto harp in hand and held abreast. then that voice. it fills the rafters with an urgency and an embrace. she evokes the likes of pan. this is the only music i can listen to night after night without set deviation and still remained enthralled. there is something so peculiar in the timing of some of these songs, and ethereal in melody, that it offers new information with every repetitive listen. i don’t mind being biased. i love these people. |
