Ed Ackerson (american indie band "BNLX"): "I was bowled over by the first PJ Harvey album when it came out. I was listening to it continuously in the van while my band the 27 Various was out on tour. One afternoon we were bumming around in Cambridge, Massachusetts, before playing a show. I was walking near Harvard Square, turned a street corner, and standing in front of me were PJ Harvey and her band! Turns out they were in town playing their third-ever U.S. show. They were happy but somewhat unnerved that some American indie rocker recognized them on the street, and I was unnerved because it seemed like they'd materialized out of a dream! They were playing at TT's, and we were playing at the Middle East, so sadly I didn't get to see them that time. I did see them a couple months later and then many times since. Polly Harvey is one of the greats, endlessly inspiring to us, and her drummer Rob Ellis is also a real force of nature." Terry Gilliam about music for his movie "Tideland" (2005): "I had a discussion with PJ Harvey, because I really like her music, and I thought that would be very interesting. She sent me over some tracks that haven't been released yet. So I'm pretty certain she'll be on this thing, in one form or another. But other than that I don't know. But until I actually see enough of the film put together, I don't really know. I want to play against the images sometimes, and that's why PJ intrigues me. She can be quite lyrical but she's also quite minimalistic, and there's some rawness in her stuff. And also I like the idea that since it's the story of a young girl, what better than to have another young girl writing the songs." Terry Gilliam after post production: "Nope, we threw it all out. It's a score. Michael Danna and Jeff Danna worked together and did it. It's not so much that PJ Harvey's songs don't work, I kind of don't need them. In fact she was just fantastic. She wrote two songs and it was a nice relationship. She really loved the movie and it was kind of on spec. If it worked, it worked and if it didn't, it didn't. They didn't do quite what I felt the film needed at the end. So we stayed with the score. I felt the invasion of another element that wasn't there in the rest of the film. The songs are really good, so luckily they'll turn up on one of her albums. So nothing's wasted." |

 gavin rossdale : I really liked PJ Harvey because she’s so off the wall and interesting and artistic. I thought she was kind of the new Patti Smith. Her first record, Dry, was really crazy. Quite a line for a woman—saying “leave me dry.” I was like, “This girl’s crazy. I love her!” I saw one of her shows, and this guy in the crowd goes, “Hey! What about some melody?” Idiot. She’s amazing. |

A lot of [the trouble] was making it sound less like a church. There were many trips to IKEA to buy rugs and baffling. Just as she was going stratospheric, local music star Polly Harvey from Bridport came in on the day her second album Rid Of Me was released (May 1993) to play an in-store set and do a signing. So I came down after school to help out. Polly, drummer Rob Ellis and guitarist Steve Vaughan were all fabulous – and signed my LP (as Rob had briefly worked in Acorn, he wrote “Good luck as my replacement”, which I thought was pretty special.) You used to see Polly around quite a lot back then – whether buying hairspray in Boots or hanging around at local gigs by bands like Gutless and Elliot Green. She was always extremely friendly.
