On BBC 6Music* radio Jo Good has a weekly feature where she has a short chat with someone from an independent record shop, this Saturday 10 July it was Steph from Bridport Music and Polly was mentioned. It's on BBC's iplayer for the next 5 days - skip to 2:44:13:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b00t1dtv

For those who cannot access the bbc iplayer, here it is transcribed:

JG: We also hear you have quite a famous regular.

Steph: Ah Polly ..... Harvey, yes.

JG: Now when did Polly Harvey first come to the shop?

Steph: Oh now you’re asking me. Long time ago, years and years ago, yes. I mean she’s a real local girl anyway.

JG: Of course, and what does Polly buy when she’s in?

Steph: Oh well all sorts. I mean a lot of it is material for her research, it’s a vast range of stuff. You know, I don’t know where to start really. Loads. I mean not necessarily stuff she’s going to listen to because this is what she really loves, it’s stuff that she’s perhaps thinking of, you know, as using it as an influence. I mean she’s just recorded her new album so she’s bought a lot of bits and pieces for that.

JG: So potentially it is you guys who are in part responsible for what we hear next from PJ Harvey.

Steph: Ah yeah.

JG: That’s wonderful, what a lovely lovely thought. Well listen Steph thank you so much.

Steph: Thank you.

JG: Have a good day in the shop. Are you opening the doors now, are you open?

Steph: Yes we’re open now. We’re playing Broken Bells at the moment, which is a great album. I’ve got customers in the shop and it’s a busy day for us, we start at 9, 9 to 5:30 most days yeah.

JG: Excellent and which track have you chosen to play us.

Steph: White Chalk because she mentions Dorset, and it seems appropriate.

*6Music was almost axed by the Director General (head Nob) of BBC Mark Thompson, as a cost savings measure but a high profile campaign was mounted to save it and last week they announced that it is no longer on the chopping block. Score one for truly alternative radio, where the spirit of John Peel lives on - literally - with all the old John Peel sessions that are played on 6Music.

It'd sure be interesting to see a list of what Polly's ordered from the store!

Polly digging up the 50's song Istanbul (Not Constantinople) by The Four Lads to use as a sample for Let England Shake, don't think anyone saw that one coming - except her local music shop. With research/references like that it's impossible to knows what else she has instore for us on the new album. Should email Bridport Music and ask if they keep Clara Rockmore's Lost Theremin Album in stock.

I really liked how she put the sample of Istanbul throughout Let England Shake. I like the application of something old from the 1950s to a song like that. She was able to form it into what she wanted to convey with the song. The whole "no, you can't go back to Constantinople" was cool.

Thanks a lot, sanvean. News about Radio 6 was a highlight of the year so far. The campaign concentrated my mind on listening to the station more than I was. Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service!
