Patti Smith has announced her first album of original material in eight years. Banga, featuring Smith's own children and Television's Tom Verlaine, will include a song dedicated to Amy Winehouse.

Smith's new single, April Fool, was released on Sunday via iTunes. "We'll ride like writers ride," she sings, "Neither rich nor broke/ We'll race through alleyways/ In our tattered cloaks." It was recorded with much the same group Smith used for her last record, the covers album Twelve, and its predecessor, 2004's Trampin'. This band consists of bassist Tony Shanahan, guitarist Lenny Kaye, and drummer Jay Dee Daugherty.

But Banga also features special guests. Besides Television's Verlaine and studio sideman Jack Petruzzelli, Smith has brought in her two adult children, Jackson and Jesse Paris. Their father was the late MC5 guitarist Fred "Sonic" Smith. While Jesse is a film composer, Jackson, a guitarist, married the White Stripes' Meg White in 2009.

Banga is an album about "the importance of respect for Mother Nature", Smith said last year. There are also tributes to friends: a song called Nine was written for Johnny Depp's birthday, an unspecified tune for the late actor Maria Schneider, and This Is the Girl is dedicated to the late Amy Winehouse. "We were at the Electric Lady studio, finishing another song, when [Amy] died," Smith told a French magazine. "I wrote a little poem for Amy. My bassist, Tony Shanahan, composed a piece of music and the two went perfectly together. We really wrote a pretty little song."

Smith will tour the UK in June, for gigs in Wolverhampton, Cardiff and Bath, followed by an appearance at this year's Hop Farm festival. Banga is available to order now.
