In my opinion, the 98 era live show ITD tracks are more listenable than the album tracks. Yeah, I know the album is recorded exactly the way she wanted it, but damn, some of the cuts are tough to listen to (and this is coming from someone who can listen to CB's trout mask replica straight through).
I really think she added something to the live shows to make them a little more concert-friendly.

I agree! It's the hardest album of hers to get into (not her worst album though!).
And I'd also like to see a lossless torrent of Lowlands... |

when I play this Lowlands recording (directly from my computer) with Winamp, I'm getting gaps between the tracks (which isn't supposed to happen with Winamp and yet here it does).
is this only me or is somebody else having this problem with this particular recording? (or could it be that this problem is intrinsic to the recording?)
maybe I just need to adjust the settings somehow (but am not aware of how to do that, nor whether it is possible to do so, in Winamp). |

for some reason I never really got into Beefheart before, although I had all the records he did in collaboration with old schoolmate Frank Zappa.
so Don Van Vliet was known to me well before I got pulled into the orbit of Polly's wonderful cosmos. and when she mentioned Captain Beefheart as a major influence, it immediately got me keen on it.
and now, just a short time ago, I started listening through the regular Beefheart albums.
Trout Mask Replica was thoroughly enjoyable listening (for me) all the way through, on my very first listening. so I can only marvel a little at all those who cite it as an example of something which is hard to listen to.
but for a seasoned Zappa listener like myself, it only makes sense that I should love this Beefheart album right away. |

^ Okay, good man. Now try Doc at the Radar Station. Many Beefheart fans find that one to be his roughest, possibly most abrasive one.
If you can listen all the way through that one, at full volume, you're among the elite.

okay then, although I didn't use full volume (today, as I listen to this album at the very first time - having made my way through all the Beefheart albums by now, chose to take them in chronological order and to take my time doing it), I had no problem at all with it (and I would have to say that I find it somewhat more credibly if people have difficulty with Trout Mask Replica than with this one).
but I have to say that I like both Bat Chain Puller/Shiny Beast and Ice Cream For Crow a lot better than Doc at the Radar Station.
my personal judgement now is that I generally like Don's later albums (the last three, overall) the best (among his works, among which a couple of albums in the middle, more precisely those from 1974, were pretty lame by comparison).
you're probably right that I should be reckoned "among the elite" (even though I've come rather lately to the world of Beefheart). |

Beefhearts work was amazing. I'd like to think that all of PJ's fans have taken some time to check it out. |
