2003-08-26, - MUSEUMS INSEL FESTIVAL - BERLIN, GERMANY
Set List- To Bring You My Love / Dress / 50Ft Queenie / Good Fortune / Rid Of Me / The Dancer / Who The Fuck? / Snake / I Think I’m A Mother / Big Exit / A Place Called Home / Sweeter Than Anything / Me-Jane / The Whores Hustle & The Hustlers Whore / Man-size. Encore#1- Oh My Lover / Hook / Shame / Missed / Angelene. Encore#2- Joe / Ecstasy.
This was the 2003 trio of Polly, Rob Ellis and Mick Harvey.
Sweeter Than Anything is of course a B side from the ITD era (A Perfect Day Elise, EP).
SWEETER THAN ANYTHING
In photographs
I've seen him laugh
Man overboard
Sun on his back
Summer was here
I remember it well
How he stood in the shade
How we both kissed and fell
How can this be?
There's nothing left here
How can this be?
There's nothing left here
So sad our
So sad our
So sad our
So sad our
Our memory
Now he talks in his sleep
Says I've never known peace
And I don't know him now
He's a stranger to me
How can this be?
There's nothing left here
How can this be?
There's nothing left here
We were
Never more than a dream
Brief as
Summer or spring
Sweeter than anything |

for me this song is one of the absolute highlights of Polly's setlist on that tour, for its intrinsic quality (obviously) but also because it came as such a total surprise that she played it: being a b-side it's not what one readily expects to be played (because alas, the b-sides generally tend to remain rather neglected in the artist's concert repertoire), therefore it's even sweeter to hear it played - yes indeed, sweeter than anything. |

Danke Schön for the info!
And yes I know it's a b-side, I was just blown away by THAT^ version.
the DEPTH of her voice...

the sheer depth of Polly's voice is usually the best thing about her singing. (incidentally, or perhaps not so incidentally, the other really big highlight for me in the 2003 tour setlist was I Think I'm A Mother.) |

I Think I'm A Mother is one of the songs I like more performed live, in all different eras (specially during 1995 and 1998 tours). Have you seen it at Bizarre Fest. in 1998, for example? It's fucking great, really. |

Ooh, I would love to see it !! Is it anywhere in the magic gardenfiles, perchance?
And on a sort of related subject - can anyone tell me please where this clip is from, and if there is more available - on here somewhere, perhaps??

Thanks !! |

PJ Harvey
Pinkpop Festival
Landgraaf, Holland
1992.06.08
PAL DVD
Quote: |
lineage: tv broadcast > VHS > tempenc 7000kb/s > dvd encryptor > DVD > VOB torrented at EZT > MPEG2 (MPEG Streamclip) > Toast 6.0.5 > VIDEO_TS (from disk image)
Tracks: (one chapter division at 05:00)
1. O stella
2. Dress
3. Hair
Stream: VTS_01_1.VOB
Type: VOB program stream
Duration: 0:09:28
Data Size: 657.67 MB
Bit Rate: 9.71 Mbps
Video Tracks: 224 MPEG, 720 x 576, 4:3, 25 fps, 8.00 Mbps, lower field first
Audio Tracks: 160 PCM stereo, 48 kHz, 1.54 Mbps
Stream Files: VTS_01_1.VOB (657.67 MB)
Info:
This DVD is reauthored from a VOB file torrented 2005.01.02 at EZTree by "allsouls." The original torrent was ripped from a compilation DVD, and so the the files as torrented could not be directly turned back into a standard DVD. I tried to reauthor a DVD from the VOB as torrented, but Toast 6.0.5 rejected the media as it was. So, I converted the VOB to an MPEG-2 file in MPEG Streamclip preserving the video and audio attributes of the original file. I then reauthored a simple DVD from that MPEG-2 file (no menus, one chapter division at 5 minutes). What I have here is the VIDEO_TS folder from a disk image created by Toast.
The video source prior to my reencoding work comes from allsouls, who states that the source material is a VHS recording of a European TV broadcast that was then digitized and encoded to DVD using the software listed in the lineage info above. The VHS source is the original source recording. He said that he had the interview and would torrent it, but I haven't seen it yet. If it becomes available, I would reauthor the DVD to include the interview. |

Another rarely performed ITD era song that's similar to 'Sweeter Than Anything' but even better IMHO is 'No Girl So Sweet'. There are 3 different live versions of it in the gardenfiles. Scottish Mike over in atforumz has recently posted the entire 1998-12-03 Brussels gig which also has it.
http://www.atforumz.com/showthread.php?t=305064
(the last track, labled The Sky Lit Up, is actually The Sky Lit Up AND No Girl So Sweet).
It's incredibly dark, but beautiful. It's slowed WAY down from the album version. If any PJ song is "too PJ Harvey", this song is it.
Which brings us to the most amazing, but as yet unidentified version of it:
http://www.mediafire.com/?fwcyxeb254c
This 96k mp3 is usually tagged or labled as belonging to the 1998-12-13 SBE gig, but according to the gigography this track was not performed there. If anyone can positively ID this track and has a higher quality version of it, please share!
NO GIRL SO SWEET
In came the girl with the sad eyes and asked him over again
"Was I too weak? Was I a child?" and
"Can't we leave here and start again?"
Said "I don't mind if you take me down" and
"I don't mind if you break it all", but
"How much more can you take from me?"
"How much more can you take from me?"
"I'd like to take you inside my head"
"I'd like to take you inside of me"
"You came from Heaven" is all he said
"You came from Heaven and came here to me, and I love you..."
He drove it fast to make the night
And looked at his angel, where she lay
Resting her head and closed her eyes
Outside the heat and the Summer fades
Deep in the sky, a storm he'd seen
Deep in the sky, a storm he'd seen
"There ain't nothing, no girl so sweet"
"Took her from Heaven and gave her to me" |

that recording from the Bizarre Fest (Cologne 1998) is probably the PJ video recording which I've been watching the most often. the best version is the one from the rebroadcast (the one with "digital" video and without the audio glitches). I have it on a disc together with the Saint-Malo show (also a TV broadcast though transferred from a VHS recording), from the same month, August 1998 (exactly a week apart from the performance in Cologne). these shows complement each other rather nicely, the one being a late-evening performance, the other one (Bizarre) taking place in broad daylight.
I wonder if this DVD has been torrented, otherwise you really ought to get a copy of this disc.[/quote]

this one is also available on stage6:
http://www.stage6.com/user/nyergk/video/1842195/PJ-HARVEY-1992
where I believe the video quality is much better than on youtube.
I'm only sorry that the interview was not included in that version (because I would have loved to get the whole thing, including the interview, in really good quality). |

Great version Dr., thanks again. I was tying to see in which show PJ sang this song as the last one or before an Encore break (due to the "last song" mention)... No big deal, almost always it was played during 1998 tour, as the last song or the song before an encore break. Haha, my 007 skills have to be developed yet. I'll try to compare it with all versions I have as files.
Later... --------------------------------------------
I already did it. No success, I don't have this gig neither in file nor on CD. |

There's also Rebecca, a never-performed jewel from the ITD era (B-side from The Wind EP).

REBECCA
I'm walking slowly, about the sea
Lover by lover, I pass them on the beach
The sun is shining, so bright today
Your voice is singing to me, across the waves
Ah
There's a young boy, makes eyes at me
Does he mouth my name, or is this just a dream?
I know inside that I can really love
The waves are glistening, like heaven from above
And here we'll stay
And sing forever of peace
I know we found love here by the sea
Could this be heaven, could this be peace
No more than sunshine and sand and waters deep
I'd always dreamed that life could be like this
Forever high and sigh from kiss to kiss
I know I've found love here by the sea |

Aggravating isn't it? I believe it's a MPEG4 codec. You may have to get a codec for the specific player you're using? Not sure.
Have you tried the VLC player? It seems to open just about anything.

I think I saw the Saint-Malo show being torrented on PureLiveGigs, separately from any other recording, but has the Bizarre '98 show been torrented in the rebroadcast version, the one with the truly superb video/audio quality?) |

"never-performed", then that is "only" the studio-recorded version which you've uploaded here?
N.B. I have no complaints about this version, only that I have it already, on The Wind EP - but I think it's a preposterous pity to write such a song and then leave it unplayed live; hey Polly, here's another request for you!
but she'd have to do several extra shows just to meet all the requests that I have in mind for her.

I believe this was torrented on Dime last August. The version I'm looking at (playing Taut - Aeeeeeeeeee!!) has the word "festival" in the upper right hand corner and the video is very sharp. |

I can't find the live version of "Sweeter" on the gmail anymore. Is it still there? I just searched for "Sweeter" so maybe it's under a different name or something |

Thanks so much for this. What an awesome version. I think the live versions of all the songs from Is This Desire are so much better than what was put on record. In fact, I like the B-Sides from that era a lot more than the album! |

god that version of joy from st.malo is amazing! |
Hmm, I like Polly's vocals better on the following linked version (BBC Sessions - FM Broadcast - 09-23-98 ). Plus, the guitars, particularly Parish's - strident. fierce. blistering. deafening.. you get the picture.

couples random notes: this is a flac file. Link is good for one week. Also, there is a single pop/crackle near the beginning and end of the track. |

While I'm here and have the time, this version of 'The Sky Lit Up' from that same radio session is also wicked good. Plus, there's an amusing song transition at the end.

strident, fierce, blistering, deafening...
Excellent descriptors!
These original live versions of Joy almost hurt to listen to, but hurt in a good way. I like the versions that have that long pause before "No hope for Joy" and then WHAM. I've had this fantasy of someday listening to that on a REALLY huge speaker setup, with the amps cranked way up. That would be awesome. |

Zeez is right. It is indeed 1998-11-30 Berlin.
The flacs for this track don't include PJ's "This is our last song" before it starts, but they do include it at the end of the prior song.
I remember reading somewhere that Polly said they only did this incredibly dark version a few times because the Europeans were somehow better able to appreciate it. Something about how Londoners were likely to start yelling out for Sheela Na Gig after too much of this.
According to the gigography it was only performed 5 times:
1998-10-28 Chicago
1998-11-30 Berlin
1998-12-01 Cologne
1998-12-03 Brussels
1998-12-04 Paris
1998-12-05 Paris
Notice how except for 10-28 and 12-05, she closed the show with it and on 12-05 the 2 songs after it were for the 2nd encore. |
