You need a place that can do pal to ntsc conversions to make you a playable copy. It won't necessarily say PAL on the cover, but it almost certainly is. |

I heard about 200 NTSC copies in the United States, but have never seen one (neither eBay nor other market places). |

Back in the day, they showed the entire thing on M2, in preparation for her IS THIS DESIRE release! I recorded it back then. I will try and find it and upload it, if I can figure that out. |

^ I don't think that will help Cat, nice of you though.
There are digitized versions of this floating around, but I didn't post any of it because the last time I looked, there were still new copies for sale. I don't know if that's still true though. |

There haven't been new copies on sale for years. It's very much a deleted video.
Edit: Also, I appear to have answered you over an hour ahead of your own message. You get good service on here! |

I think I figured out why they used PAL format for this, from Wikipedia:
Quote: |
"PAL vs. NTSC
Because the PAL format has greater resolution than NTSC, it is generally accepted as being of higher quality" |
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PAL
Its supposedly better quality. |

I bought one of the last remaining "brand new still factory-sealed" VHS tapes with Reeling from a seller on amazon.co.uk, just because I wanted a perfect-enough copy to use for a VHS-to-DVD transfer, whereupon a person in Oregon made the transfer, so I actually have a very good quality copy of the Reeling movie on DVD and it's in NTSC format. (all other copies I'd seen previously were more or less flawed, bad quality transfers or maybe it was the tapes that were worn out somehow). |

I think the reason Reeling was released in PAL was because that was the video format for the parts of the world it was initially released in, rather than a delibrate quality decision. PAL does have a slightly higher resolution than NTSC, but the difference isn't really significant. |

If you got a new DVD player let me know. The one you used to have wouldn't play DVD/R, - home made DVDs.

How long ago was this? It might be the copy I saw.

Exactly, NTSC is the format used in the Americas and PAL everywhere else. More or less. I'm not sure about Japan. |

Japan uses NTSC. and if I'm not mistaken it is only the U.S. and Canada (in the Americas) - but correct me if I'm wrong about that. |

it was 21 November 2006 (I just checked my amazon account for the exact date). there were two "brand new still factory sealed" copies available at the time (from two different sellers). since I had bought a supposedly "brand new" Reeling VHS on eBay but found it flawed, now I was hell-bent on getting a perfect copy no matter if I had to pay exorbitantly for it. |

there's been a continuing reluctance to torrent this since it's a movie that was officially released (thus off limits according to the rules of DIME, for instance - but it's never been released officially on DVD, so I don't know if the fact that it was released on VHS should preclude it from being torrented now, especially since that VHS is out of print and no copies of this movie are currently being sold by those who released it). |

I very rarely use torrents, I wouldn't know how to get that going. I am up for learning how if it gets the video to anyone here though. |

Sendspace's limit is 300MB.
Rapidshare's limit is 200MB. |

Thanks for your help in getting this uploaded guys.
Reeling, in my opinion, is a far better picture of PJ Harvey on the road than Please Leave Quietly. |

karloz, I noticed you have an image of Black Hearted Love CD single as your avatar. Where did this come from? As well, where are these reviews of A Woman A Man Walked By coming from? The record is not released until the end of next month. |

How much did you pay, Pollyphoniac? I'm also looking to do this for a PAL conversion and am wondering what would be reasonable to pay for a brand new - sealed copy of the VHS |

first of all, let me say that it pleases me to find this movie finally made available to everybody here; I just watched a few scenes from the uploaded version and can say that this is indeed good video quality (or at least, as good as one may expect from a VHS-to-DVD transfer like this) - and I assume this version to be the very same one that I had made, then shared with H&HW (and DrDark too, if I remember right).
I paid GBP 24.95 (plus the shipping cost, which made a total GBP 28.89) to acquire this VHS from a seller on www.amazon.co.uk.
what is reasonable to pay... this is very hard to say when we're dealing with an item that is almost impossible to find a brand new and sealed copy of.
when I bought mine there were actually two different sellers to choose from, so I went for the one that was least expensive.
and there's still another seller on www.amazon.co.uk who has one ("Brand new and sealed") and is trying to peddle it for GBP 34.99. I suppose this may be the very same seller who was there when I bought mine.
but tell me, this PAL conversion you're thinking of doing, would this be "Reeling" you have in mind? or some other movie? |

however, the chapter points I had made are missing on this version here, so this could mean it's not the same version after all (or would it be possible for the chapter points to disappear in the transfer-to-hard-drive-and-uploading process?) - but there's a very minor audio flaw, some faint but distinct sparkling noise during the first scene where Polly is in the dressing room (in Glasgow) before the mirror doing her vocal exercise, this occurs in the very same place on my VHS tape, so this would indicate that it is the same version after all (but I just wonder how the chapter points could have disappeared - unless the disc I copied for H&HW was without chapter points; this would be plausible since I have one version with and one without the chapter points).
never mind, it's good watching anyway; but those chaper points are so convenient for being able to skip forward (or backward) to specific segments within this movie. |

Yes, I hope to convert reeling to DVD.
I did attempt it a while ago, and the result was so fuzzy - my tape at the time also turned out to have a crease in it causing a jump in one part.
I've got access to better equipment now, just need an immaculate tape! |

the easiest (and least expensive) way might be for you to use the tape that I got. the conversion I had made to DVD was into NTSC (from PAL) and a new conversion (from PAL into PAL) might very well turn out to be of better quality. (not that this NTSC version I now got on disc is any bad, not at all, however it's still good to try for something even better.) |

never mind, it's good watching anyway; but those chaper points are so convenient for being able to skip forward (or backward) to specific segments within this movie. |
Yeah anyway I downloaded this shit off of eMule a while ago. |
okay, this is good information, now it only makes me wonder if the version I got transferred to DVD might be marginally better (if it isn't the same version). could H&HW (or DrDark, both of whom I think got this Reeling DVD from me) run some kind of check on both versions to find if they are identical and if they're not, which version is the better one? |

I'm pretty sure I got my Reeling DVD from eBay (and it's a not very good conversion).
amazon uk shows 1 new and 4 used VHS copys currently:

Thanks for your help in getting this uploaded guys.
Reeling, in my opinion, is a far better picture of PJ Harvey on the road than Please Leave Quietly. |
Thank you very much for this. |

I made another attempt at a capture to PAL DVD with my current Reeling VHS. Playing it with the new VCR there seemed to be no huge flaws - no jumps at least. I guess the other player was a lot more sensitive.
Anyone's captures any better/worse than this?

^ I don't know if its better or worse, but I have an NTSC copy sent to me by another Gardener, made by flashbackdvd.com. The aspect ratio looks a little off in the capture above, or is it just me? |

that's the one made from my PAL tape, by a friend in Oregon who did the transfer. I still don't know if it might be the best version available now, even though the one uploaded by Teclo seems very good to me (so much that for a while I thought it was the one that came from me), but perhaps it would be even better to make another transfer into PAL format (avoiding the shift to NTSC which must have lessened the quality somewhat), anyhow I'm awaiting further judgement on this. |

i forget who said it but this doc is definitely better than PLQ if you're looking for more polly and less performance. i love her sense of humor! |

PAL format I guess . I would love to get one NTSC original, but I think only few pieces of it were produced. |
